I visited Far Rockaway as part of the relief effort and I just wanted to help out as much as possible. In 2004, I was in Florida when the tropical storm hit the main land, and I thought that was devastating. In other words I am familiar with superstorm disasters. This is why I wanted to help out as quickly as possible.
Far Rockaway looks like a war torn area. I met many people who were without power for 7 to 10 days; Some are relying on electrical generators or just sunlight and candles to provide light. Many families lost at least one car which for some may mean a loss of income as they work as chauffeurs and taxi drivers. Many basements and first floors were flooded with water levels reaching as high as ten feet, making their homes and apartments unlivable. Believe it or not, a few lost their homes completely to fire or flood.
We were in Far Rockaway on consecutive Saturdays - November 10 and 17 - Sunday, November 18 and Thursday, November 22, which was Thanksgiving Day. As some of the apartment buildings have boilers underwater, there won't be heat, water, or gas for months. Anything we can do to help out, I think we should. I spoke with the Red Cross and FEMA and was told that there would be counseling services to help people cope with the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. There were people that told me they saw the ocean and the bay meet, which can never be a good sign.
Overall, while Superstorm Sandy was a major disaster in that many, many people lost their homes, lives, valuables, cars and jobs, it is up to us to continue the struggle for the appropriate agencies to provide relief. In the meantime, we should all do whatever we can.
